Thank you to Fr. Edward Doughty

Campus Minister at Salem State College and University of Massachusetts, Boston
Campus. Fr. Ed will begin his new
position in serving the needs of these two colleges on Septmeber 1, 2010. We thank Fr. Ed for his ministry to our
Parishes this past year and wish him well in his new position.
Welcome to Fr. Robert Blaney
Cardinal O’Malley has assigned as full-time permanent parochial
vicar the Rev. Robert Blaney to St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven Parishes,
effective September 6, 2010. Fr. Blaney
was ordained at Holy Cross Cathedral in May of 2007 and was assigned to St.
Mary Parish, Franklin and St. Theresa Parish, West Roxbury. Fr. Blaney is a graduate of Boston College,
and St. John Seminary. Before attending
seminary, Fr. Blaney was a professional actor in New York City for 13 years.
From 1998-2001 he starred in “2 Pianos, 4 Hands” on Broadway and across the
US. He has roots in South Boston and is
very excited about his new assignment.
His father grew up in South Boston and attended Gate of Heaven School
(K-12). His cousins, twins Fr. Jim
Blaney, OMI and Fr. Joe Blaney, OMI, were ordained by Cardinal Cushing at St.
Brigid Church. His grandparents, Jim and
Mary Blaney were from Gate of Heaven and St. Brigid Parishes. We will have a chance to welcome Fr. Blaney
on the weekend of September 12.
BECOMING CATHOLIC: THE RCIA JOURNEY
BEGINS IN EARLY OCTOBER
“Master,
to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced
that you are the Holy One of God.” These
words, spoken by St. Peter, are the words of a person who has received and
incredible gift – the gift of faith in Jesus Christ. As Catholics we share Peter’s faith, and
believe that Jesus established a Church which continues to pass on and
safeguard the Lord’s “words of eternal life.”
If you are seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church, or have a
family member or friend who has expressed interest in becoming Catholic, now is
the time to consider the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
The RCIA program is for those 18 years of
age or older who seek full incorporation into the Catholic Church. It is intended primarily for:
1.
Those who have never been baptized in any faith community.
2.
Those who have been baptized in another Christian denomination but
would like to enter the Catholic Church.
3.
Those who have been baptized Catholic but have not received the
sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.
RCIA classes will begin in October. If you would like to know more
about this program, please contact Br. Steve Fahrig at the parish office or at sdfahrig@gmail.com.

Understanding the Mass:
The Opening Prayer
The
introductory rites of the Mass conclude with the opening prayer. After the greeting, the penitential rite, and
the Gloria, the priest addresses the congregation with the words, “Let us
pray.” Ideally, he will then pause for a
few seconds of silent prayer. During
this time, we should take a moment to remember the person or intention for
which we are praying at Mass. After a
brief moment or two of silent prayer, the priest then reads the prayer for the
Mass of the day. On the Sundays and
weekdays of Ordinary Time, this prayer is rather general in nature. During the other seasons of the year (Advent,
Christmas, Easter and Lent) and on feasts of our Lord and of the saints, the
opening prayer is designed to specifically refer to the mystery being
celebrated or the saint being honored on that day. The opening prayer is also known as the
“Collect,” because in this prayer we gather up or “collect” all the silent
prayers of the congregation into the vocal prayer offered by the preside. Each opening prayer or Collect has four
parts: an address to God (usually to God
the Father); a recollection of some deed God has done for his people; a request
for God’s help in the present moment; and a request for the mediation of Jesus
Christ. Here is an example from the Mass
for Easter Sunday: “God our Father, by
raising Christ your Son you conquered the power of death and opened for us the
way to eternal life. Let our celebration
today raise us up and renew our lives by the Spirit that is within us. We ask this through Christ our Lord.” At the end of every opening prayer, the
congregation responds by saying “Amen.” We
should make an effort to listen attentively to this opening prayer and answer
with an enthusiastic “Amen,” showing that we really believe the words that the
priest has just voiced.
Congratulations to our two Seminarians
Anthony Cusack and John Lee
We congratulate John Lee and Anthony Cusack as they enter St. John Seminary this September. Anthony will continue on in his 2nd year at the Seminary and John will begin anew in his 1st year. On Sunday, August 22nd John and Anthony will serve the 9AM Mass at Gate of Heaven and the 10:30AM Mass at St. Brigid. Following the Mass we will have an opportunity to wish them well at reception in the downstairs church.
Coffee and Pastry will be served.
